The West 7s qualifier series kicks off this weekend at the home of last year's champion, the Denver Barbarians. Eight clubs will be competing in the first of three West qualifiers. The others are July 12 in Kansas City, Mo. and July 26 in Omaha, Neb. The top two teams at the end of the series will advance to Nationals.

As the reigning runners-up at Nationals, the Denver Barbarians are odds-on favorites to advance again this year. After losing their first game last year to the Chicago Lions, the Barbarians reeled off four-straight wins before falling in the final to Seattle OPSB.

The Barbarians won the 2013 Denver 7s, beating rival Glendale in the final, a game that would see one team advance to Nationals and the other miss out. That contest was played inside the stadium at Dick’s Sporting Goods, as will this year’s final.

The field is divided into two groups based off the final standings from 2013. The Barbarians garnered the top spot, while the Kansas City Blues and Glendale Raptors are the 2nd and 3rd seeds, respectively. After three pool matches, the top two teams from each bracket advance to the Cup Semifinals.
