A pair of tries by Lauren Doyle proved more than enough for USA Women’s 7s as they kicked off Pool C play in the Atlanta 7s with a 24-0 defeat of Spain.
In the fourth minute of play, the Eagles were able to force a turnover by Spain and Alev Kelter powered her way in for the try to give the USA a 5-0 lead. At the death of the half, Lauren Doyle made a spectacular run, getting the Spanish defense to bite on a fake pass and then taking off down the left sideline to extend the Eagles lead. A successful conversion by Bui Baravilala gave the Eagles a 12-0 lead at the intermission.
It took the Eagles only 37 seconds of the second half to get on the board when Doyle completed her brace thanks to a lot of hard work by Kelter in the middle of the field. Another successful conversion by Baravilala saw the United States lead extended to 19-0.
The USA then wrapped up its scoring in the 11th minute when Kristen Thomas recovered a mishit Spanish clearance and then battled her way in for the try, giving the Eagles a 24-0 lead.
The Eagles return to action with a 5:04 p.m. Eastern Time start against Japan. The United States then wraps up Pool C play with a 7:26 p.m. kickoff vs. New Zealand.
