The London Scottish announced Wednesday the naming of Mike Friday as the club's director of rugby. He was believed to be in the running for the vacant 7s head coaching job with USA Rugby, but Wednesday's announcement appears to eliminate him from that contention.
Friday served as the London Scottish backs coach last season, after successful stints on the IRB 7s World Series with Kenya and England before.
In the press release announcing the exit of Matt Hawkins, USA Rugby have itself a 10-day deadline to name a new head coach. Saturday marks day No. 10.
"I am really pleased to be remaining at the Club as Director of Rugby," Mike Friday is quoted as saying in the club's story on his signing.
"It has been very evident from my time here that there is real ambition to create a sustainable legacy with fantastic support from the Board of Directors and sponsors...
"I am looking forward to complementing the coaching team of head coach James Buckland and backs coach Peter Richards who are two great coaches with real ambition and talent.
"With the highly talented Tim Harper and Jenny Graham leading the performance and medical areas respectively, we have a first class backroom team.
"This is an exciting journey London Scottish is on and I'm pleased to be part of it."
