Springbok flyer Bryan Habana will join the South African 7s team this week in an effort to make the Blitzbokke squad for the upcoming World Series stops in Las Vegas and Vancouver. His possible inclusion rivals that of New Zealand's Sonny Bill Williams and Australia's Quade Cooper for the most famous player to make the transition to the Olympic code.
“Bryan is one of those players that always has a lot of energy," South Africa coach Neil Powell said. "Apart from that, he brings with him a lot of experience of playing rugby at the very top level, so in that sense his presence in the squad will also be a great motivational factor for our guys.
“I can tell you Bryan is very eager to learn. He realizes that it’s been a very long time since he last played sevens, but he is excited by this challenge and really looking forward to be part of our system.”
Habana is the all-time leading scorer for the Springboks. He joins Francois Hougaard and Juan de Jongh as full-blooded 15s players to join the Blitzbokke this season. Habana is a World Series veteran, having played in 2004 in Wellington and Los Angeles.
