A look at some of the 7s tournaments going on this weekend.
Back Nine 7s
The Back Nine 7s will take place this weekend in North Augusta, SC. The competition will feature round-robin play in the morning and a seeded tournament in the afternoon that will yield a champion.
The Back Nine 7s will have a men’s social bracket and for the first time have a women’s division. The women’s division will be hosted by the Augusta Women’s RFC. There will be a “tent city” for all participants and fans that want to attend this weekend of rugby.
Bryn Mawr 7s
Second City Troop RFC will host the 24th annual Bryn Mawr Invitational Cup at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. The Men’s bracket consists of 16 teams divided into four brackets. Second City Troop and South Jersey have entered two squads while Schuylkill has fielded three teams to round out the group of 16.Each bracket will participate in pool play and the top three teams in each bracket will be placed in the Bowl, Trophy and Cup Semi-finals respectively.
The Women’s bracket has four entries that will compete in pool play and then be seeded for the playoffs. Second City RFC will be having a post-tournament social gathering at Franklin’s located in nearby East Falls.
The 15th annual Revived Harborfest 7s Rugby tournament will take place on the Michigan Lakes, in Kenosha Mich. The tournament used to be affiliated with the Harborfest Festival until the festival ceased to exist. As a result, the tournament had not been played until the Parkside Rugby Club revived the tournament in 1997. The tournament has a men’s/collegiate open bracket of up to 12 teams. In addition, Harborfest will have a four-team women’s division.
Hotter N Hell 7s
Formerly known as Cruise-A-Matics 7s tournament, the Hotter N Hell 7s currently has eight teams registered for its men’s 7s competition. The Tournament’s name is fitting as the tournament is taking place in hot and humid Columbus, Georgia. Most of the teams hail from Georgia. However, Tallahassee RFC has entered a team and will travel from neighboring Florida. The teams have been divided into two, four-team brackets with the top two teams in each bracket advancing to the championship semi-finals. The 3rd and 4th place teams in each bracket will compete in a consolation semifinals.
The first Cruise-A-Matics 7s tournament took place in 1984 and after being a great success has continued throughout the years and been transitioned into the Hotter N Hell 7s tournament.
June Doom 7s
This weekend will play host to the first annual June Doom 7s Tournament. Hosted by the Mandeville Brothers and Lakeshore Rugby, the tournament will be a small eight-team affair, with two teams out of Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge has entered the Bon Temps and the Red Fish. Come out and support the first June Doom 7s tournament in Mandeville, Louisiana and watch some exciting rugby in the bayou.
Huntington Beach 7s
Huntington Beach Rugby Club is hosting its 7s tournament at El Lago Circle in Fountain Valley, Calif. The tournament tentatively has 20 teams but is divided into a traditional IRB 7’s tournament with 16 teams a novice pool of four teams. The Novice pool will be guaranteed three games while the competitive field of 16 teams will be guaranteed four matches, except for the finalists in the Bowl, Shield and Cup, finalists who will earn a fifth match.
The tournament showcases teams from throughout California and the West
Coast. Pasadena, Orange County, and Huntington Beach have all entered
two teams. Additionally, one club is traveling from Las Vegas to
Huntington Beach to play in the competitive bracket. The Novice Pool
features an under 18-squad Mira Mesa, and three colleges, CS Riverside,
Whittier College and CS Long Beach. The idea of the novice pool is
