Behind an MVP performance from Nick Fujiwara, the Middlesex Rugby Club won the South Shore 7s in Massachusetts, finishing the tournament 5-0.
Middlesex beat Boston College 57-7 and UNH 52-5. Their scoring continued against Worcester, 54-14, and in the semis against Boston Maccabi , a team they shut out 38-0.
Boston maccabi were actually the surprise of the tournament, beating Hartford and New York in pool play.
In the final, South Shore challenged Middlesex a bit more, and held them to
just two tries. But the Barbarians defense was solid and they shut out
South Shore 12-0.
John Kokinda and Mike Mahoney were huge for Middlesex in forcing turnovers in contact.
"We have focused on contesting at the breakdown and quick attack off the
turnover,” said Head Coach Josh Smith. “Our defense improved as the day
wore on, a true testament to our fitness."
Nick Fujiwara had a breakout performance in his first start for the top side, scoring nine tries and setting up several others.
“Nick came to us last 7s season very raw, but he has really worked hard to put himself in the mix for our top side,” said Smith.
Middlesex hosts their own 7s tourney at Woburn HS in the Boston area next week.
