Saturday was another competitive day of rugby for the NRU 7s Series. Old Blue finished 4-0 in pool play with wins over White Plains, the Village Lions, Long Island, and Boston. Old Blue won their pool games with a combined score of 134-9, with their most competitive match being a 34-12 victory against Boston.
Pool B was a bit more intriguing as there was a three-way tie for first place. NYAC lost to the New England Prime, the New Haven Bulldogs lost to NYAC, and New England lost to New Haven. However, all three teams won each of their three other pool matches, leaving them tied with a 3-1 record. Point differential functioned in NYAC’s favor as they moved on to the Cup Final, while New England advanced to the third place match. New Haven went on to win the 5th place matchup 26-5 over Long Island.
The match between Boston and New England for 3rd place was arguably the most exhilarating match of the day. New England would have to play without standout center Evin O’Driscoll, who was injured earlier in the day. Boston took advantage as Collin Yip commenced the scoring with a break along the sideline to touch down in the corner. The conversion was missed, giving Boston a 5-0 lead just about two minutes into the game. Jared Collinson for New England answered about two minutes later with a brilliant individual effort, stepping through several Boston defenders for a try to tie the match 5-5. A frightening moment occurred in the second half when Yip was brought down after making a break in attack. The game was delayed about 20 minutes, as he needed to be stretchered off the field due to a head injury. Yip, who is feeling better, was a lucrative weapon in attack for Boston throughout the day. Once play resumed, there was no score for the rest of the second half, pushing the match into overtime. Boston looked very strong in the extra minutes, as Gavan D’Amore-Morrison continued his success in gathering Ben Roach’s kickoffs and Duran Vota was a force in attack. Deep into overtime, however, New England prevailed after Jon Feldman attacked Boston’s defensive line before dishing off to Chris Frazier who finished the game with a try under the posts.
Old Blue started off the Cup Final against NYAC with three quick tries right after the opening kickoff. Derek Lipscomb took the initial kickoff in the air to give Old Blue possession. After several phases the ball landed back into the hands of Lipscomb who took a switch from Dan Freed-Pastor 80 meters for his ninth try of the day. James Bird converted to give Old Blue a 7-0 lead. Minutes later, Bird and Dom Wareing moved the ball swiftly through the back line out to Marcus Henderson who dotted down his seventh try of the tournament. After converting the try, Bird picked up an errant pass from NYAC shortly after the restart and scored. He converted his own try for a 21-0 lead. NYAC quickly regrouped and found their attack. Kyle Granby illustrated some illusive running and found Chris Mattina, who finished the run off for the try. Justin Hundley converted leaving NYAC behind 21-7. NYAC scored again after moving the ball out wide to Stephen Sanchez, who broke through for a try in the corner. Old Blue led the match 21-12 entering halftime, but NYAC was not finished fighting. A great run by Hundley to open the second half created space for Greg Voigt to accelerate though Old Blue’s defense for the try. Hundley converted, leaving NYAC behind by just two points. From that point on, however, it was all Old Blue. Nate Augspurger and Fitz-James Adams each touched down unconverted tries to send Old Blue home with a 31-19 win in the Newport 7s Cup Final.
