After day one, it appeared as though only one team could challenge the Midwest's 1823 and Chicago Lions in the summer classic that is Cape Fear 7s -- the Pacific Island Barbarians, a side full of Polynesian all-stars from west coast clubs, including Old Puget Sound Beach star Isimeli Daveta.
The tournament field's other five competitors hadn't challenged the aforementioned closely enough to seem a threat, and the Lions and Columbus bunch got through their quarterfinals with ease.
Chicago beat the Georgia All-Stars 31-5 and 1823 pounded Florida 50-0. The Barbarians and South All-Stars also advanced, ousting Cape Fear and the Kenya Exiles.
Both semifinals would be close, but only one would result in an upset. The South pushed the Lions to the brink, but ultimately didn't have enough gas to get a win. In the other semifinal, the Barbarians did muster an upset, beating the previously undefeated 1823 14-5.
The Barbarians then avenged their only loss of the tournament, a 19-12 defeat at the hands of the Lions in pool play, in the title match, winning the men's elite bracket at the 37th annual event.
