Santa Monica won its own tournament Saturday, Southern California’s second qualifier this summer, beating OMBAC 38-5 in the final. The win launches Santa Monica, which finished second in Tempe June 14th at the first qualifier, into first place in the series standings.

OMBAC did not play in the first tournament, so Belmont Shore, which won in Tempe, holds onto second place despite a fifth-place finish in Santa Monica. The perennial SoCal favorite was bounced from title contention on the weekend by the Old Aztecs, which are using homegrown players this year, as opposed to the previous couple of seasons.

OMBAC traveled to Santa Monica just 10-deep, and injuries cut their lineup down to just seven by the final. The lack of subs and 10-minute halves took a toll on the San Diego side. Other than a Zac Pangelinan try early on, it was all Santa Monica.

Matthew Lesgourges ran in Santa Monica’s first two tries to give the Dolphins a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Brian Regal and Zach Bonte also dotted down, putting the score at 26-5 at halftime. Ollie Marchon, Danny Thomas, who did the majority of the conversion kicking, tacked on tries in the second half.
