For the second year in a row, an American side has won hardware at the World Club 7s in London. Seattle finished ninth, winning the Shield. Traditionally, ninth place wins the Bowl, but with just 12 teams involved, the World Club 7s decision makers decided to award the Shield.
Seattle was hard done in not making the Cup Quarterfinals. They were in maybe the toughest pool in the tournament, and their point differential wasn’t good enough to get them into the Cup rounds. They opened pool play with a 33-14 defeat of the Waratahs, but lost narrowly to Auckland and Kuban Krasnodar on day one. Auckland went on to lose in the Cup Final, and Kuban Krasnodar finished third.
On day two, Seattle dominated. They beat Gloucester 22-12 in the Shield Semifinals and the Harlequins 28-14 in the final.
Last year, New York brought home the Plate, and this year they fell just one win short of doing so again, finishing seventh. New York finished pool play 1-1-1, beating the Harlequins, tying Western Province and losing to Russian side RC Enisei.
They were beaten badly in the Cup Quarterfinals, 36-5, by Auckland, with Carlin Isles soring the lone try. In the plate semifinals, they led the Blue Bulls 14-12 at halftime, with Isles dotting down twice. But the South Africans owned the second half and took a 31-14 victory. New York exacted some revenge in the 7th/8th-place playoff, beating RC Enisei 34-7. Derek Lipscomb scored a hat trick in the win.
