Great win. In nearly 30 years of playing the Argentines, the Pumas and versions of either the Jaguars or XV, American teams were winless, until the Eagles took down the Argentina XV Saturday at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. That’s a big deal to be celebrated.
It’s also notable it happened in the first match under new head coach Gary Gold, whose fingerprints were already in the win.

The Eagles begin their Americas Rugby Championship title defense Saturday against Argentina XV at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. If history is any indicator, the first game might as well be considered the championship game, as each of the competition’s first two years, these teams have finished first and second.
“Probably can’t win the title this weekend, but can probably go quite a long ways... Read More
His hire was announced in October, the official start-date the first of the year, but for all intents and purposes, the first time Gary Gold put his boots on the ground as the new Eagles head coach was at USA Rugby’s National Development Summit Jan. 19-21 in Denver. His first time in the States as a USA Rugby employee, his first time being introduced to the American rugby community, and his first... Read More
The John Mitchell era of American rugby is officially over, as he’s left to take over the Blue Bulls of Super Rugby. Mitchell took the helm in January, 2016. In 16 international tests, the Eagles went 8-7-1 under Mitchell, making him the first men’s Eagles coach to end his time with a winning test record. Including two draws with Argentina XV and a loss at the hands of the Maori All Blacks, his... Read More
The USA Eagles looked like a different side in the Americas Rugby Championship than the team who lost all three of their November matches. They looked confident and fit. They looked like a side likely to win in each match they played.
Before the match against Argentina XV, I looked at some of the things beyond the four wins in the ARC that suggested the Eagles are moving in the right direction.... Read More
The final match of the 2017 Americas Rugby Championship was the tournament decider. Both Argentina XV and the USA Eagles entered the match 4-0, and both were on the right side of gaudy point differentials. And the sides tied in Houston last year to open the ARC. This year’s match was another tie, 27-27. However, USA is the tournament winner via bonus points.
The match was a scrappy, intense... Read More
The USA Eagles have won four matches in a row. In three of those matches, they’ve exceeded 50 points. I am someone who does not need a lot of reason to get excited, and if I just leave the door open a crack, my optimism comes pouring out.
Every time I am swept up in an optimism flood, I get worried. Are these wins progress, or just a nice blip? All of the matches, after all, have been against... Read More
John Mitchell’s Eagles are on the brink of making history, though it may take them some months to realize it. They’ve won four tests in a row, over Chile, Canada, Brazil and Uruguay. A fifth-straight win would be new territory for the men’s 15s senior national team.
Only twice in history have the Eagles won four-in-a-row before. From April through June in 2003 the USA beat Spain twice and... Read More
At the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo outside of Santiago, Chile hosted USA in Round Four of the 2017 Americas Rugby Championship. The Eagles secured the result they needed—a bonus point win that keeps them on target for the chance to win the ARC. The final score was 57-9.
In contrast to the sharp start last weekend against Canada, USA opened the match in a relatively sloppy, if ambitious,... Read More
