Why? Because the Chicago Lions, we felt, were the better team, but hadn't
yet shown it. These rankings have to go by what has happened, not by what
we think will happen.
The Lions beat New Orleans in New Orleans, and move up accordingly.
All of the higher-ranked teams in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic crossovers
won, but none did it with much conviction. That's why some move down.... Read More
We are just going from how we see them performing against their local
competition. This ranking could change drastically in the coming weeks. But
you've got to start somewhere.

1. Should St. Mary's get a big boost from beating a team not in the D1-A
Answer: Yes. It's Cal, still the defending champs and still the team that
swept UBC. We don't think Cal is as strong as they have been in recent years
- probably 3rd or 4th if they were in D1-A, but they are still a terrific
team. St. Mary's beating them says more than Life scoring 98 on Notre

So there have been a few growing pains in these HS rankings, as evidenced
by the fact that two teams drop out entirely because they are (just imagine
our surprise) Single-School teams!
We figure, given that all the teams in boys rugby now use high-schoolers
exclusively, we might end up merging these rankings at the end of the
season, and going forward.
These teams play each other... Read More
Had Navy pulled off a win over Army (Army won 33-31) then we would have had
all sorts of issues, given that Army has, overall, produced the results,
but Navy has already lost to Penn State. So would we have dropped Army down
below Penn State and Navy? Or would we have concluded Navy has improved
enough to wash away that loss to PSU?
Well we didn't have to do that, anyway. The only... Read More
It's crazy, although much of that can be blamed on the fact that High
School Club teams are not U19 anymore - all players have to be in high
school. That has obviously changed the status of some programs, as they
don't have that one or two or three college freshmen available to
As a result, in top-level games between single-school and club teams, the

With the season still really quite early, and not having begun in many
cold-weather regions, we leave some teams out until they get started.
In this ranking the names of greatest interest should be:
Snow Canyon - possibly the best team in Utah right now.
Dixon - set to play Jesuit this weekend in a game that likely decides which
team is the best single-school program in... Read More
It's highly likely that the middle of this pack is a crapshoot. Arizona State
plays Arizona this coming weekend - is one demonstrably better than the
other? Not really. However, Colorado juuuust lost to AU earlier this season,
so they have to be ranked right behind. Cal Poly, CWU and Texas A&M have
all recorded useful results that could put them somewhere between 10 and 20.
The big move... Read More
We were treated to games between #1 and #2, and #3 and #4 this weekend.
Even though the 1 v 2 matchup wasn’t a league game, it was played like one
and BYU won it. St. Mary’s were right there for a while, but were blown out
late, after they emptied their bench.
Don't get us wrong; BYU was the better team, but perhaps the score wasn't
quite indicative of true competitive... Read More
