When Ethan and I first started recording The Carter Divide, he had almost no experience in watching professional rugby. In between then and now, lots has changed, but he still has a ways to go before he is serious rugby fan. Still, the latest episode of The Carter Divide is out, and another important corner has been turned.
The corner turned is that Ethan is now following a team. Any sporting spectacle is limited if the observer, the potential fan, is watching out of context. Following a team, knowing what is happening in a competition or a league is how one goes from casually interested to real fan. Ethan has watched some Super Rugby, Top 14, Pro 12, Aviva Premiership, Six Nations, among other things. The team that has hooked him is the USA Men's 7s.
For the last few weeks, Ethan has made it clear that he sees no reason why this squad could not be full-fledged stars on and off the pitch. I, of course, have no good answer for that. They are stars in my house already. And, for that matter, I overhead one of the players on the Under 13 team I've been helping out with say that he was going to "do it like Madison Hughes" as he tried to make a nifty kick.
