The Austin Blacks are still on top of the Texas DI league after beating HARC 47-12 Saturday.
The Blacks were paced by two tries apiece from lock forward
Ty Terrazone and fullback Tomasi Ramanumanu, and also saw loose forwards
Sam Areias and James Lowery as well as wing Jeffrey Seaney. Flyhalf James
Watson kicked two conversions and a penalty.
"Each week I want the guys to play better," said Austin Head Coach Lachlan Ferguson. "I just want 10 percent better each week. We're looking at where we've fallen in the playoffs against the top teams, and we're trying to improve based on those lessons."
As a result, Ferguson has had his team work harder on scrums and lineouts, the Blacks have better embraced video analysis.
"We're also working on our depth, which I think is really crucial when you get to playoffs," said Ferguson. "You can't go all-out with your team to win on one day and turn around and have the same guys go all-out the next day. You have to be able to rest players. Fortunately, we're getting the depth where I am able to rest players who played all 80 last year."
In second are the Dallas Harlequins, who beat the Austin Huns 27-10. The
'Quins got five tries but only one conversion. Prop forward Jimmy Jewison
scored two tries, while Connor Bertrand, Jordan Highberger and Spencer
Cameron all scored one. Cameron added the lone conversion.
This was a big victory for the Harlequins, as a loss would have thrown them back into the morass of mid-level teams trying to get that other home playoff game (given that the Blacks are well on the way to finishing 1st). Now the Harlequins are secure in 1st with a game in hand over the Dallas Reds.
The Reds, Huns and HARC are now battling for those remaining spots. Fort Worth also won, 40-20 over The Woodlands. But both teams are on the outside looking in at the moment.
