Even with the Elite Cup offering a different competition, it's not enough, and it is likely that we will see at least two, maybe three or four clubs follow NYAC out of DI and into an independent schedule along with the Elite Cup.

It may be, even, that we see an informal return to a sort of Super League.

And now word is that one major club will announce next week that they will not play in this year's DI playoffs, despite the fact that said club has qualified for them and would have been a major contender for a national title.

The travel costs are a factor, but the move is also a symptom of the fact that American rugby is at a tipping point, where the elite clubs need to find a way to stay elite, and pursue their own goals, while the good amateur teams compete in a different way.
