Army Rugby officially made the jump to varsity status Friday, with both the men's and women's programs moving under the umbrella of the athletic department. See below a video interview with West Point director of athletics Boo Corrigan explaining the move.
The move had been known about for some time, as had the date it would become official. Who would coach the teams was still somewhat of a questionmark. Mike Mahan, who had been the interim men's head coach, will stay on, and Bill LeClerc, who's currently coaching with the Women's National Team and has coached the West Point women since 2012, will stay on as women's head coach. Mahan also served as the Black Knights head coach from 1988-2002.
The men's program will compete in the Rugby East conference, and the women's team will play for the American Collegiate Rugby Association.
