Vassar took down upstarts AIC 52-12 in the USA Rugby DII college Round of 16 Saturday in Princeton, running in eight tries on the Rugby Northeast champs.
The Brewers got a hat-trick from scrumhalf Margaret Kwateng and captain and wing O'Mara Taylor as they romp into the national quarterfinals. Taylor also kicked six conversions for a 27-point day.
The game kicked off early in Princeton due to the threat of storms in the
area, and the fact that Norwich's match against Rutgers won't happen as
Rutgers pulled out due to financial and injury issues, and Delaware and
Stony Brook were unable to replace them on short notice.
In Mobile, Ala., former national DII champs Shippensburg had a fairly easy time of it with Appalachian State. Ship kicked off and pinned AHO in their own end, and that was the story for the rest of the match.
"It was a good overall team performance," said Shippensburg Head Coach Scott Stratton. "Everyone seemed to pick up the slack. The forwards did well to keep possession but we just camped out in their end of the field."
The Shippensburg attack was led by inside center Lucy Renna, who
consistently tested the Appalachian State defense. Renna scored a try and
flanker Faith Biesecker scored two, while fullback Molly Doyle scored a try
and four conversions for 13 points. Appalachian scrumhalf Kathryn Furphy
scored her team's only try.
