The University of California shut out Notre Dame in the first Varsity Cup match, winning 77-0.
Cal led 29-0 at halftime but Notre Dame battled gamely. The Irish had a couple of prime scoring opportunities but when called on the Cal defense was outstanding. A long period of Notre Dame pressure started with a snappy break in the backs ultimately ended with a turnover for Cal and a long-range try for Jesse Milne that seemed to be a bit of a backbreaker.
After that Cal had more spring in their step and put the game away. They will host a semifinal next Saturday.
