Central Washington put the Air Force Academy to the sword Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Varsity Cup, systematically slicing up the Zoomies to the tune of 81-28.
Central were overall bigger up front and punished Air Force in the breakdown - so much so that the Zoomies were unable to really contest for possession at the tackle.
That allowed the Wildcats to work some phases together and really punish Air Force when their defense was backpedaling. Backs such as Tanner Barnes, Andrew Nelson and Aladdin Schirmer set up multiple tries with their speed, and their passing was on song, also.
Alex Reher rubbed salt in the Air Force wounds with his sound goalkicking, ensuring CWU's early tries counted for seven.
Reher actually opened the scoring with a penalty kick before Zach Siemens ran in for the first try of the day (Reher converted). Tyler Coffman, the forwards in a maul, and Jacob Bates all touched down to make it 29-0 before Air Force got on the scoresheet.
When they got the ball the Zoomies usually had a long way to go, but their speed and endeavor made this an entertaining game. Air Force ended up scoring four tries, all converted, but for every time they touched down, CWU touched down tries.
Bates and Barned would both touch down before Air Force scored again, and right after that, Schirmer scored two to make it 55-14.
Air Force's third try made it 55-21 but then a brilliant Barnes run set up Josh Bower to make the score 62-21. Again the Zoomies worked their way in, but for CWU Bower, Shelby Williams, and Barnes all got in the act, with Reher converting two, to finish the scoring.
Reher scored 21 points with his boot, including several from near the touchline.
