Clemson vaulted into first place in the Atlantic Coast Rugby League with a bonus-point 25-17 victory over previously 2-0 North Carolina.

UNC led 12-5 at halftime, but three Tigers tries in the second period saw them through.

Clemson got within two points two minutes into the second half with a try from inside center Nolan Courvell, and then tied it when fullback Stefan Friend slotted the conversion.

The game remained very tight throughout. Clemson finally took the lead midway through the second half when prop Max Simons scored, but three minutes late North Carolina tied it up 17-17.

The stage was set for some heroics. Friend slotted a penalty to give his side a slim 20-17 lead and then with two minutes left freshman wing Nick Johnson scored the try that sealed the game for Clemson and ensured UNC would be denied a bonus point for a close loss.

Clemson gets a bonus point for four tries (No. 8 Matt Fetty scored in the first half), and are now 2-1, as is UNC. However, Clemson has two bonus points and leads the Tar Heels 10 pts to 9.
