The staff at Rugby Today, several collegiate coaches and administrators have come together to provide a comprehensive Top 25 for the men's division I rankings. Each member of the committee, whom are from various regions across the country to avoid regional biases, provided a list of a Top 25. The rankings were then consolidated and the teams were ranked based on a point system with the top team in each ranking receiving the highest number of points and the 25th ranked team receiving the lowest number of points. This methodology allows Rugby Today to come to a fair and balanced rankings for the men's division I.
BYU was the consensus number one pick, followed by perennial powers Cal, St. Mary's and Life. A number of teams at the top of the rankings play the bulk of their 15s season in the spring but the pedigree of these programs keeps them at the top of our list.
Rounding out the top 10 are Utah, Indiana, AIC and Kutztown. Utah is undefeated in Rugby West and Indiana had a strong victory over Davenport. AIC has stormed through ECRC play and Kutztown remains undefeated in the talented Rugby East.
The biggest surprise of the past weekend came from Iona. The Gaels defeated a previously undefeated Army, but the committee wants to see more from the Gaels to break into the top 10. An early season loss to Wheeling Jesuit is the only blemish on its record.
Notre Dame College, who moved up from Division II this season, has been impressive and made the first installment of rankings. Three SCRC teams Cal Poly and Wisconsin round out our Top 25.
