The Eastern Penn RFU men’s D1-AA college conference has been renamed the Keystone Conference, and has added two new teams for 2012-13.
Organizers, who have appointed Sean Duffy as the new commissioner, reasoned that the name Keystone Conference had a better and more marketable ring to it.
It also opens up the conference to bringing in teams from outside Eastern Pennsylvania – hence the addition of West Virginia University and University of Pittsburgh for fall 2012.
The teams in the Keystone Conference for next year will be:
Saint Joseph's University
West Chester University
West Virginia University
University of Pittsburgh
The conference will hold league play in the fall.
“We are very excited to add our two new members,” said Duffy. “And much
credit should go to outgoing commissioner Dan McHugh who was instrumental
in expanding our brand that direction.”
Both programs previously competed in Allegheny Rugby Union Division II. Their annual rivalry match, the "Backyard Brawl" is perhaps losing its luster in football, but will remain a big part of the rugby calendar.
“It is a great opportunity for both of the programs to truly grow the game on their campuses via traditional rivalries that make sense to the average sports fan,” said Duffy.
