Championship weekend provided the final information for the 2016-2017 DI Rankings. The Penn Mutual Varsity Cup and the DIA Final did not make things easy for the committee.

St. Mary’s defeated Life 30-24 in a tightly contested match. Very little separated the two teams and the St. Mary’s victory means nobody in DI finished undefeated. The Gaels remain as consensus number one but after that things get tricky.

Determining number two in the rankings was difficult. Life only lost one game this year and defeated a tough BYU side in the semifinals. Cal easily won its Varsity Cup game over Arkansas State and its only loss to an American side came to St. Mary’s . The Golden Bears blew a late lead against St. Mary’s and did not play BYU this year. The Bears lost by three points less to the Gael’s so they slot in at number two.

Life comes in at number three and BYU remains at four. Lindenwood moves back into number five after ASU fell to Cal quite convincingly. The Lions had a much better result against Life than ASU so the Lions slot in at five.

The only other game of the weekend was the DIAA final. NDC capped off an impressive year with a win over UC-Davis. The Falcons finish 15 overall and UC-Davis slots in at 23rd.
