College Rugby is back in swing with the West Coast teams kicking off their conference schedules. The PAC conference opened with several competitive games. UCLA used a strong first half to down Arizona State 32-12 and Arizona nearly knocked off highly ranked Utah. Arizona had a strong recruiting class last year and it took a tremendous second half from Utah to win 39-31. Thus, despite the loss, Arizona jumps in at number 21. Utah drops one spot to number ten from our last fall ranking.
BYU kicked off its season last week with an emphatic victory over Utah in a scrimmage. We do not take much stock in scrimmages but the Cougars remain our consensus number one pick.
The other key match of the weekend saw St. Marys battle Lindenwood. The 3rd ranked Gaels came back to beat Lindenwood 24-13. Although the Lions lost this weekend, they do not move down due to the fact that the top five appear to be leaps and bounds above the rest of the field.
The only other ranked team to play last week was Central Washington. The Cougars lost to Olympic Club 19-15 but it was the first time they had been outdoors all year. Fairing well against a Pacific Rugby Premiership side allows CWU to remain at number six.
