UW-Whitewater with ball

Most DII Conferences are winding down conference play and getting ready to start conference playoffs. These games will be crucial in determining who will make the final 16 of the USA Rugby playoffs.

An all-exciting matchup in the Rocky Mountain took place and the game did not disappoint. Montana State edged the higher ranked Western State 20-12 and will take home the conference regular season title. These two teams will likely meet again in the conference finals in a couple weeks. The winner will go straight to the round of 16 and the loser will likely have a play in game.

In the WIIL, Whitewater has all but wrapped up the north while Illinois State claimed the southern title with a win this past weekend. The rest of the conference will continue to jockey for position as the top four in each will head to the conference playoffs.

RPI upended defending Tri State champion’s Sacred Heard 27-21 to take control of the northern division. William Paterson continues to lead the south, but like the WIIL, the top four from each conference make the playoffs. These eight will duke it out for a spot to nationals.

In the Southern Conference, three out of the four teams have clinched a playoff spot. UNC-Charlotte and Furman have finished first and second in the west respectively, while ECU clinched first in the east after beating Coastal Carolina this weekend.  Currently, Citadel claims the second spot but a Coastal win over UNC-Wilmington with a bonus point while yielding less than 33 points, will give Coastal the tie breaker and the second spot.

The Gateway playoff situation is confirmed. Missouri S&T defeated Pitt State this weekend but due to a cancellation earlier this season, finish second in the western division. S&T will take on undefeated St. Louis University while Pitt State will battle Southern Illinois. These games will take place on October 28 with the winners playing the following day.

There was a battle in the Great Lakes between two undefeated teams. Traditional stalwart Grand Valley State took on former NSCRO team Bethel College. Both were 3-0 prior to the weekend but GVSU came up victorious 16-8.

Bloomsburg and York are both undefeated in the MARC but will not play each other this season. Bloomsburg has captured one more all-important bonus point and currently sit atop the standings. The huskies have impressively only yielded seven points all season.
