The DII playoff picture has officially taken shape as USA Rugby announced the 2016 bracket. Eight of 23 teams have already been determined, with the rest to bed determined this weekend.

Minnesota-Duluth claimed the Northern Lights to no surprise but it was actually North Dakota State that made noise this weekend. North Dakota State upended Winona State before falling to the Fighting Penguins 31-7. Both teams make the playoffs, however, as the Northern Lights gets two berths. ND State will play a play in game in two weeks.

The WIIL is down to four teams. Whitewater broke the century mark once again while UW-Milwaukee and Illinois State both won. The closest match of the weekend saw Northern Iowa outlast Northern Michigan. Three teams will get a slot in the national playoffs out of this deep conference. They will be determined next weekend.

The Rocky Mountain finished its playoffs this weekend and will see two teams advance to the playoffs. Western State continued its unbeaten streak, knocking off Colorado School of the Mines to take the conference. Mines will play Principia in the first round of the playoffs.

Principia won the Gateway by beating Pittsburgh State and then by avenging an opening day loss to Southern Illinois.

The Coast Guard won the Colonial Coast anticlimactically. The undefeated showdown with Hartford never occurred and the military school advances to the final 16.

The NECRC gets to berths to the playoffs, with Norwich claiming the top spot. Vermont is looking good in second but things get a bit dicey because Rhode Island trails by eight points. URI has two games remaining. Two wins with at least one bonus point and a loss from Vermont in its final game would give URI the spot. However, the second game for URI is slated for November 12th, the same date as the scheduled playoff game.  Something will have to give.

Whoever does get the second spot, will face off with Salve Regina. Salve won the Colonial Coast convincingly.

Grand Valley State claimed the Great Lakes last week while the rest of the divisions will be finished this upcoming week. The Tri State is down to Sacred Heart and William Paterson while Upstate New York has four teams left. Cortland should be the team to come out of that conference.

Both the Southern Conference and the Cardinal Conference get two spots at nationals. The Southern Conference had a bit of a surprise with UNC-Wilmington falling to UNC-Charlotte. Furman and UNC-Charlotte will face off this weekend with only seeding on the line. Both teams will advance. The game is being played to determine who will be forced into a playoff. The Cardinal has the same issue, with VMI and NC State battling to get a bye next week.  Both runners’ up will face off on the 12th.

Southern Connecticut complicated Rugby Northeast by beating Bentley. Both teams are now 5-1 while Providence sits at 6-0. Bentley will play Providence this weekend so a win for Bentley could put the league into a three-way tie and force it to be settled on bonus points.

Whoever comes out of this region will face off with the MARC runner up. There are four teams left in the MARC, but Rowan and IUP should be the teams that advance.
