The DII playoff picture is almost set with 22 of 23 teams claiming their spots in the playoff bracket.

Nobody was able to match Whitewater in the WIIL. The Warhawks blasted Northern Iowa 88-12 and the defeated Illinois State 45-11 to capture the conference title. With the three teams making the national playoff, the third place game mattered. UW-Milwaukee defeated NIU 52-35 to earn a play in game next week.

It was a wild finish in the Cardinals Conference. We had previously reported that a game between NC State and VMI would decide the playoff positions from this conference. While that was not completely accurate, both teams will be in the final 23.

The Cardinal Conference had a six-team playoff with an odd format. The quarterfinal teams had to play back to back against teams that were fresh. The Northern Virginia Griffins were up to the task, however, knocking off VMI 30-28 to get into the final. Since they are not a college team, though, the Griffins are not playoff eligible. Therefore, the third place game actually determined the second spot to nationals. VMI defeated Old Dominion 54-24 to take that spot while NC State claimed the top spot.

The Colonial Coast also produced a surprise. It looked like Salve Regina was through to the playoff with and undefeated conference record but the conference final saw Plymouth State upend Salve 30-22 to snag the spot.

The Tri State concluded with two undefeated teams squaring off. Sacred Heart won the day with a 32-12 victory over William Paterson and will travel to play Furman at Furman in two weeks.

Furman won the Southern Conference over UNC-Charlotte 44-20 and as a result get a bye. The 49ers will play VMI next week and the winner will head to Pittsburgh for the round of 16.

Bentley overcame a loss to Southern Connecticut by beating Providence this weekend. Bentley took the top spot in Rugby Northeast, and due to points, Providence took the second spot.

In Upstate New York, Cortland won a pair of games to claim the conference berth. It will take on Providence next weekend.

Rowan won the MARC over a tough York team 32-17. York upset IUP in route to the final and earned the second MARC slot in the playoffs.

Finally, Middlebury muddied up the waters in the NECRC. By beating Vermont, it opened the door for Rhode Island to sneak into the second spot with a victory over Middlebury this weekend. However, the play in game for the Sweet 16 is supposed to take place this weekend. It looks like Rhode Island will have to win on Saturday and play again on Sunday if it should win the conference game. If URI should lose, Vermont will take the second playoff spot.
