Towson against UMBC. Evan Lappen photo

It's conference playoff time in DII, and it's nearly national playoff time. For a lot of conferences, the postseason is repetitive, seeing the same results from the regular season played out again for seemingly no reason. In other conferences, the playoffs are actually heated, or they bring together two divisions that didn't paly each other throughout the fall.

At any rate, there have been few upsets so far in the postseason. One that did come off was Furman taking down UNC-Wilmington in the Southern final. The Seahawks were five-time defending conference champs, but the Paladins had a better day in the final and are advancing to the DII Sweet 16. The result also sees them climb into the top 10, as UNC-Wilmington's competitiveness in the national playoffs over the last several eyars has established the Southern as a respectable league.

In the Potomac, the semifinals were pointless exercises, as Towson and Salisbury both won by massive margins. The final, however, will have a lot of bearing on the Sweet 16.

Dropping out of the Top 25 this week are Lousiana Tech and East Carolina. ECU was eviscerated in the Southern playoffs by both Furman and Appalachian State, and Louisiana Tech lost in its regular season finale to middling Tulane. La Tech still has a chance at winning the Deep South this weekend in the conference championship game against UL-Lafayette.

Joining the Top 25 are Rowan and Roger Williams. Rowan enters at No. 20, having put together a very nice resume in the Mid-Atlantic. Roger Williams is undefeated with some impressive score lines in the Colonial Coast conference, which is new to DII this season.

You might wonder why Coast Guard is ranked behind Rhode Island, despite beating the Rams recently. That series is 1-1 this season, as URI won earlier in the fall, and we are putting weight in standings. Currently, Coast Guard still sits behind Norwich, which is under URI in the New England standings.
