After six prior disappointing appearances in the Collegiate Final Four rugby championship, the Air Force Academy prevailed to win its first title in 1989 by defeating Cal State Long Beach 25-7 at home in Colorado Springs. The deserved win ended ten-years of frustration for the service academy and its coach Lt. Colonel Vern Francis.

The final was preceded by a fierce semi-final match between Air Force and Army that went down to the wire with Air Force winning 17-16. The Zoomies were up 7-4 at the break over the Black Knights. In the second half, Army tied the game at 7-7 via a try (N.B. Four points in 1989). The match ended when Army missed a penalty to give Air Force the narrow, one-point victory.

In the consolation round, Army defeated Penn State 38-10.

Much credit went to Cal State Long Beach who scored an upset over U. Cal Berkeley 18-10 in the Pacific Collegiate Championship.
