The season began for schools from the Big 10 as eight of their women's rugby teams got into the action this past weekend.

Penn State, led by a huge game from freshman center Brianna Troyer, who scored two tries and was monstrous on defense all day long, beat a good Ohio State team 70-5. Bianca Dalal kicked five conversions, Lauren Shissler got four, and flanker Nadia Garnett scored two tries in the rout.

Michigan beat rivals Michigan State 32-5, while Purdue defeated Illinois.

Indiana also got on the winning side, beating Notre Dame 29-7.

"I am happy with the performance," said IU Head Coach Vaughn Mitchell, who spearheaded the move to create a Big 10 league. "We improved from last week. Our goal is to improve each week. We came up with a game plan and executed it well.  I think the tight five played really well this weekend, they put a lot of pressure on the backline and porformed on defense."

Key for Indiana was forward Tiffany Nyguen, while the backline defense contained Notre Dame danger woman Ashley Okonta well.
