Sooners rugby players will spend Saturdays this fall, not only scoring tries, but welcoming members of the Sooner Club, the principal fundraising arm of OU athletics, to home football games. They'll be stationed in reserved parking lots and other greeting areas of Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, greeting Sooner Club members.
"The Sooner Club is elated to have the OU Rugby Team serving as greeters at our donor parking entrances on game day," said assistant director of athletics development Annie Martin. "We selected these young men because they truly embody the mission of our athletics department, understand what it takes to be champions in sport and in life, and will represent OU in the highest regard."
This is the just one effort OU's program has made to strengthen its relationship with the athletic department under second-year head coach Jason Horowitz. The Sooners cleaned up the stadium after football games last season, and they're working with their athletic department in the hopes of hosting a Big-XII branded rugby event in Norman.
