The second rugby club donation from a Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company branch agency (1847Financial of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania) and the Winged Foot Rugby Foundation (New York Athletic Club) was given to Pennsylvania-based colleges St. Joseph’s and Villanova.
Penn Mutual has made a firm commitment to collegiate rugby as the title sponsor of the Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC 7s), scheduled May 29, 30 and 31 in Philadelphia’s PPL Park located in Chester. The company also sponsors the Penn Mutual Varsity Cup to be played this Saturday in Utah when California and BYU meet for the 2015 National College XVs championship. (Broadcast by the NBC Sports Network at 4 p.m. Eastern time, 2 p.m. Rocky Mountain time, May 2).
Insurance industry speaker, Joe Jordan, former NYAC rugger, conceived of the idea of these joint rugby contributions (total $1,000 per team, with $500 coming from 1847Financial and $500 from Winged Foot). The idea has met with approval from local Penn Mutual agencies. Jim Meehan, Managing Partner of 1847Finacial, said, “We are excited about Penn Mutual’s dedication to rugby. These college athletes represent the future of our industry, so, to support them, while helping an up-and-coming sport, is a great opportunity for 1847Financial.”
Stating this year, a portion of Penn Mutual’s sponsorship will be to award monies to the winning CRC team as a further example of advancing rugby on the college level.
With rugby making its return to the 2016 Rio Olympics, the Penn Mutual CRC is noteworthy for having showcased 15-athletes who played for the national teams.
