Fleet Week Rugby Match

As part of NYC Fleet Week festivities an All Navy Rugby team was activated to play in a ceremonial match against combined NYPD-FDNY rugby team.

The match was played under the Triboro Bridge on Randalls Island next to Ichan Stadium in front of a crowd of about 200.  Fans heard  "Pomp & Circumstance" music,  including FDNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums and saw a NYPD color guard.

At halftime a raffle raised money for the Widows and Orphans Fund.  The Navy team included Coast Guard, Navy and Marine Corps players from as far away as San Diego. The side was made up of active duty personnel and reservists called up for Fleet Week in New York City.

After a 22-minute stand, Navy cracked the defense of NYPD/FDNY squad and slotted thru for the first try.  Despite the efforts of a proud NYPD/FDNY XV, they were no match for a skilled Navy team that ran in 11 tries mostly from flyhalf, center and wing combinations.

Final score Navy 62 - Combined NYPD/FDNY 5.
