The Denver Barbarians battled and scraped their way to a 14-10 defeat of SFGG Saturday at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colo., handing the San Francisco club their first loss of the Pacific Rugby Premiership season.

The Barbarians scored just the one try, from flanker Brendan Shea, who was a meter away from making it two, while fullback Max de Achaval slotted three penalties. SFGG scored through a try from center Mile Pulu, converted by flyhalf Volney Rouse, who also kicked one penalty.

“We felt we left a few points on the field,” said Denver captain and openside flanker Logan Collins. “But the guys really played hard, especially on defense. We worked hard on defending lineouts. They have a good maul but we were able to maul pretty well ourselves, and our defensive maul was really good.”

Collins said the entire forward pack devoted its energy to defending the SFGG maul and that in itself helped limit Golden Gate’s attacking options.

The loss, coupled with Glendale’s big win over OMBAC, saw SFGG relinquish 1st place to the Raptors. SFGG Head Coach Alex Houser was not pleased.

“We had little to no intensity, execution, physicality, or intelligence,” he said. “That is not a recipe for victory. Some of our shortcomings have been hidden in the games we’ve won, but they were magnified today with the road trip.”

Houser said subs injected a little impetus into the SFGG effort, but not enough, and, he added, “had we been able to score late we would have stolen a victory we didn’t deserve.
