The United States defeated Spain 29-12 in the quarterfinals of the Challenge Cup at the Hamilton 7s. Perry Baker once again led the way with a pair of tries and the offense was explosive throughout the game.
The United States took a quick tap after a short kickoff but the Eagles knocked the ball on. Spain looked to have the first score after a break through but Baker blocked a pass and earned a penalty to get out of trouble.
The first points didn't come until four minutes into the match. After some helter skelter play, Kevon Williams found a gap in the Spanish defense. A few phases later the ball swung left and Williams put Martin Iosefo through for the opening 5-0 lead.
Spain took the lead after a sloppy knock on from the USA. A series of phases later, Ignacio Martin split a gap for a 7-5 lead.
After the halftime hooter, Folau Niua won a turnover at the breakdown. The Eagles put the ball through the hands and Baker went right around the last man out wide and to score under the posts. With the conversion, the Eagles led 12-7 at the break.
Spain found space off the second half kickoff but an unplayable ruck gave the ball to the Eagles. Off the scrum, the USA put the ball through the hands. Iosefo found a gap and popped the ball wide to Baker who sprinted in for his second of the game.
Kickoffs continue to be one of the best areas of the game for the Eagles. After the try, Danny Barrett took the kickoff straight out of the air and sprinted down the field inside the 22. In typical Barrett fashion, he ran right at the Spanish defender and bowled him over before dotting the ball down. The Eagles took a 24-7 advantage.
Spain added 7 points before Carlin Isles capped off the game with a late try. With a final 29-12 final, the Eagles meet Papau New Guinea in the semifinals.
