The USA Falcons capped off their South American tour with a Plate title at Vina del Mar 7s Sunday in Chile. The Falcons ended the tournament with a 4-2 record, splitting with Canada, falling to Chile and beating an invitational side twice, as well as eventual champion Argentina.
A three-try win over Argentina provided a great start to the tournament, but a narrow pool loss to the Maple Leafs saw then Falcons fail to win the pool thanks to inferior point differential, despite them crushing the invitational side, 29-0.
On day two, the USA opened with a 17-5 loss to Chile, but bounced back with another shutout of the invitational side, 33-0. Then in the final the Falcons avenged the pool loss to Canada, blanking the Maple Leafs 29-0. It was the Falcons’ second blowout of Canada on the tour, having won, 33-0, a week earlier in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
The winning record over Canada, along with the upset of Argentina, were highlights of the tour. Combined with the Mar del Plata results, the Falcons finished 6-6 over the two tournaments, displaying improvement on the second leg.
Those not injured on the tour will now jet back to the States to join the pre-Wellington and Las Vegas high performance camp in Chula Vista, Calif.
