Team USA took on Canada in their second match of the Youth Olympic Games and lost by a score of 19-14. The Americans were put on their heels from the opening kickoff, absorbing a vicious Canadian attack.

Canadian flyhalf H. Darling, who has been playing phenomenal throughout the tournament, started the scoring off for Canada two minutes into the game. Canada converted to take a 7-0 lead. The United States were immediately put back on their heels when Canada broke through the American defense. As a Canadian player took off towards the try zone, USA scrumhalf Tess Feury chased her down for 30 meters before bringing her to ground and knocking the ball loose for an American scrum at the five-meter line.

Three minutes later, however, Canada’s Darling stiff-armed her way through a jumbled USA defense for the second try of the match. Additional USA knock-ons led to another Canadian try just before half.

After falling down 19-0, the United States started to fight back in the second half. Flyhalf Richelle Stephens found a gap and was brought down about fifteen meters from the try zone. USA recycled and sent the ball to Kat Ramage, who drew an opposing defender before spinning the ball wide to Feury who touched down for the try.  Three minutes later, the buzzer soon sounded, but Team USA finished strong as Stephens broke through a tackle for a try and conversion. The push was too late as the United States lost 19-15 to a strong Canadian side.

“I think the girls have done very well, especially with how nervous they are,” says USA Girls Head Coach Richie Walker. “It is a huge stage being at the Youth Olympics for the girls and I think they have done really well. They showed that they could fight back from behind. We almost had Canada at the end, but just lost on time.”

In the other pool matches Australia won a close 15-12 battle with China, while Spain handled Tunisia 27-0.
