Opening Ceremonies

The 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies are complete. The event was held at the phenomenal Olympic Stadium in front of a sold out audience. Despite steady rainfall throughout the night, the Nanjing Organizing committee put on a spectacular display.

The night began with the ceremonial Parade of the Flags for participating countries. Each country selected a participating athlete to have the honor of carrying their respective flag. Taekwondo athlete Kendall Yount was voted by her American teammates to assume the responsibilities for Team USA. After the hour-long march, an hour-long show complete with acrobats, lights, dancers, fireworks, and musicians took place. Finally, the night culminated with the of lighting of the Olympic torch.

Nanjing has been packed with thousands of Youth Olympic Games Volunteers and the entire city is filled with advertisements for the games. The Opening Ceremonies alone had upwards of 1000 performers in the show. Additionally, Chinese President Xi Jinping even spoke at the Opening Ceremonies tonight, further signifying the significance of this event to the Chinese people.

The Opening Ceremonies ended around 10pm Nanjing-time tonight. Consequently, the USA Rugby 7s athletes headed straight to the Olympic Village, as they begin competition tomorrow morning. The Girls play Spain at 10am, while the Boys face Kenya at 11am.
