In response to finger-pointing from PRO Rugby owner and CEO Doug Schoninger, who blasted an email Tuesday informing of the termination of all player contracts, USA Rugby issued a release.

"USA Rugby categorically denies any and all allegations purported by PRO Rugby Tuesday, Dec. 20, and is saddened to hear of the planned termination of all valid contracts signed by athletes that have fulfilled their playing duties for season one and were scheduled to be paid through the duration of their 12-month contracts," it said.

"USA Rugby's policy is to not speak to disputes in the media, and will have no further comments regarding this particular issue at this time."

The crux of the issue is PRO's exclusive sanctioning agreement, as Schoninger doesn't feel USA Rugby held up its end of the bargain. The emergence of the Major Rugby Championship and reports of the Guinness Pro 12 being interested in American expansion are part of the story, yes, but far from the only issue.
