Granite Bay won the Varsity and Junior Varsity Northern California Championships May 4. The varsity downed the Islanders of Burbank 50-32 in the championship match.

The Islanders knocked off Danville, ranked No. 3 in the country, in one semifinal. Granite Bay beat Hayward 46-29 in the other. The latter contest was exciting to watch, with a total of nine lead changes. San Francisco Golden Gate was GB’s victim in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Granite Bay JV team completed its regular season with a perfect 10-0 record in the Gold division and took the top seed into the playoffs.

Playing LAMO rugby in the first round the JV team exploded for a 64-14 win to reach the semifinals, where they’d meet and beat a very big and very physical Diablo, 39-29, for a finals berth.

Danville’s JV brought a 12-0 record into the finals after cruising through the playoffs. Granite Bay won the battle of the unbeatens 17-14.

Granite Bay’s Varsity team awaits Santa Monica in the California State Championship this weekend.
