First 100 Years – Milestones

1823 – William Webb Ellis runs with the ball at Rugby School.

1839 – First rugby club formed at Cambridge by a Rugbeian.

1843 – Club formed at Guy’s Hospital.

1858 – Clubs started at Edinburgh and Black Heath.

1866 – Blackheath and Richmond abolish hacking.

1869 – Rugby comes to Oxford.

1871 – Rugby Football Union (RFU) formed in London

1871 – First written laws.

1871 – First International: Scotland vs. England in Edinburgh.

1872 – First Varsity Match – Oxford vs. Cambridge.

1872 – First rugby club formed in France.

1874 – McGill visits Harvard to introduce rugby.

1875 – Harvard vs. Yale in first rugby match of “The Game.”

1875 – Universities decreased teams from 20 to 15 players.

1877 – All international games featured 15 players.

1881 – England and Wales employ three-quarters.

1886 – International Rugby Union formed.

1893 – Schism as northern clubs break away to start Rugby League.

1905 – First All Blacks visit to UK.

1907 – RFU buys land at Twickenham.

1908 – First Wallabies visit to UK.

1923 – Centenary match at Rugby School.
