A different, first time venue for the USA will be against a German XV this November away. The German Rugby Federation, founded in 1927, is comprised of 125 member clubs, totaling 14,000 members. Amateurs represent most of the players on the national team, with 12 of the 34-person squad, coming from Heidelberger RK.

Historically, three-months before the 1936 XI Olympiad in Berlin, Rugby was an exhibition sport. Teams from France, Italy, Romania. and Germany participated with the French winning the tournament 19-14 against Germany.

This 2017 European season, the Germans experienced a 2-3 record in the second tier, Rugby European Championship, their best and highest placement ever. The two league victories were against Belgium (34-29), and, more importantly, an upset against Romania (41-38), which has been a Rugby World Cup participant. The three losses were against Georgia (6-50), Spain (15-32), and, Russia (25-52).

Germany has experienced outstanding world sport success, most notably in the FIFA soccer football World Cup where the nation is 4-4 when it made the final. Cup titles came in 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014. The runner up places occurred in 1966, 1982, 1986, and 2002.

German athletes are famous in many sports, including Boris Becker and Stefi Graf, tennis, Katarina Witt, ice skating, Jan Ulrich, cycling, Kornelia Ender, swimming, Franz Beckenbauer and Jurgen Klinnsman, soccer, Bernhard Langer, golf, and the NBA’s Dirk Nowitzki.

Germany Rugby's stated goal is to qualify for the Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan. Currently, it ranks 22nd in the world, its highest slotting. Formerly, unknown and unheralded, Germany seeks to improve on the rugby world stage, and will welcome the upcoming match with the Eagles.
