The United States will call four training bases home during the 2105 Rugby World Cup. The Eagles' four pool matches have been spread all over England, and corresponding training bases have been selected, as announced by the International Rugby Board Tuesday.
"Simply put, our team bases offer the best opportunity for us to train well, see, and be a part of English culture so that everyone has fond and lasting memories of England, its history, and wealth of pageantry," Men's Eagles Manager Tristan Lewis said.
Portsmouth Royal Navy Rugby Union - Portsmouth, England
This will be the USA's first stop, as they prepare for the opening match against Samoa at Brighton Community Stadium on Sept. 20. Portsmouth and Brighton, about an hour from each other, are situated on England's southern coast, and the Royal Navy base will host the Eagles.
Leeds University - Hortsforth, England
After the Samoa match, the Eagles will land six miles outside of Leeds at Leeds University to prepare for their Sept. 27 clash with Scotland at Elland Road. The most-capped Eagle of all time, prop Mike MacDonald, played professionally for Leeds-Carnegie in the English Premiership for seven seasons, and current Glendale head coach Andre Snyman played for the Leeds Tykes in the RFU Championship.
Haileybury School – Hertford, England
Haileybury School will host the Eagles in their lead-up to the Oct. 7 meeting with South Africa at iconic Olympic Stadium in London. The 150-plus-year-old school sits about 45 minutes from Olympic Stadium and will also host Argentina earlier in the tournament.
Hartpury College – Gloucester, England
Ahead of their final pool match with Japan Oct. 11, the USA will rest their heads at Hartpury College, just about 15 minutes from Kingsholm Stadium, home of Premiership side Gloucester. Japan will be more familiar than the Americans with the town, as the Cherry Blossoms will have played Scotland in Gloucester a couple of weeks prior.
