The Denver Barbarians went 5-0 Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park to win Denver 7s, the first of three West qualifiers. The Barbos were dominant in the performance, amassing 211 points on the day, while conceding just 24. Denver was only in one remotely close contest, a 20-17 defeat of the Kansas City Blues in the semifinals. The Barbos then trounced rival Glendale 61-0 in the tournament final.
Denver advanced out of Pool 1 with 40-plus-point shutouts of Aspen and Omaha and a 43-7 defeat of the St. Louis Ramblers. Aspen managed a 2-1 record in their first tournament back on the West circuit in a couple of years to advance to the semifinals. In Pool 2, Glendale went 3-0, narrwoly beating the Kansas City Blues in the deciding match. The Raptors blanked Aspen 25-0 in the other semifinal before falling flat against the Barbos. Kansas City walloped Aspen 36-0 in the third-place match.
Given the lopsided scores in favor of Denver, Glendale and the Blues, the West looks like a three-team race for two spots. The Blues beat the St. Louis Bombers, Aspen and Olympic Club by a combined score of 122-0. Glendale beat Olympic Club by just 12, but drilled the Bombers 45-0 and shut out Aspen.
The next qualifier is July 12 in Kansas City, Mo. and the final tournament is July 26 in Omaha, Neb.
