Brian Doyle with several NJ High School All Stars

At Morristown Memorial Hospital on June 24th, the New Jersey State Based Rugby Organization hosted its first annual awards reception to honor high school players from the 2014 season. The highlight of the night was the presence of USA 15s Eagle Brian Doyle, who gave an outstanding speech about his journey to becoming a member of the USA Men's National Team. The 6’7”, 245-pound lock garnered fifteen caps for the Eagles throughout his career. The veteran has an extensive rugby resume despite not picking up the sport until college. After declining to pursue collegiate basketball, Doyle picked up a rugby ball for the first time at the University of Rhode Island. After graduation, he began his career for the New York Athletic Club, where he was a part of two Super League Titles in 2008 and 2010. He debuted for the Stars and Stripes on June 7, 2008 against England.

Doyle cherished the opportunity to speak to the high school players. “It was a great night for me and it was great to see the NJ SBRO represented in such a strong way,” said Doyle.  “I am from close by in Rockland, NY and none of this even existed when I was in high school, so it was truly an honor for me to be a part of it. It was an honor to impart some of my experiences and show the possibilities of where New Jersey grassroots level rugby players can go.”

Doyle’s presence at the event was very meaningful to these young athletes as well. “To have someone playing at the highest level of rugby come and give a speech about his road to success meant a lot to me,” said Union Mudturtles High School standout Michael Dabulas. “I am sure everyone had the same feelings as I did when Doyle was giving advice and telling everyone how to get better. The fact that he stayed after to talk to me and others about the steps you should take to be an Eagle meant a lot to me.”

Doyle’s rugby career was put on hold throughout this past winter after having two surgeries for a broken bone in his foot. The injury originated while playing for NYAC, and then was exacerbated while competing for the Eagles against Canada in August of 2013. Doyle, now healthy, feels confident about his play and remains eager to get back into a USA jersey. “Now I have healed 100% and have some good rugby under my belt,” Doyle remarked. “I have been back in the Eagle’s setup, back in the camps, and back with the New York Athletic Club. I feel really strong, really fit, and really healthy. I am looking forward to the next assembly and my next game in general.”

Among those recognized by receiving certificates at the event, were the boys and girls New Jersey 15s All-Star Teams that competed at the Challenge Cup Regional All-Star Tournament in Pittsburgh, PA. Earlier this year the NJ SBRO partnered with the NJ Blaze 7s program to send a team comprised of NJ High School players to the High School Collegiate Rugby Championship. Both the boys and girls NJ Blaze/NJSBRO 7s teams were similarly distinguished. Lastly, honored were the All-State Teams for each division, voted on by coaches throughout the league.
