Iona opened its 2014 season with a 53-3 defeat of former conference rival Fordham Saturday. The Gaels, as to be expected for a team coached by former NYAC coach Bruce McLane, was superior to the Rams in the lineouts and scrums.
The nine-try, 50-point win was an improvement over the 22-point win Iona scored over Fordham last fall, when the contest was a conference match. Iona has since joined Rugby East under McLane, who took over the program in the spring. The Gaels are joined in the move by Buffalo and St. Bonaventure, who also left the Empire for the Rugby East. Rutgers left the Empire for the Keystone.
While Iona will still likely be up against it when running out across from Rugby East giants Kutztown, Army and Penn State, Saturday's win signals the program has made big strides under its new coaching staff. The Gaels open league play Saturday against Wheeling Jesuit. Fordham begins league play Saturday against Binghamton.
