Even though the United States hasn't played since November and won't lace up for a full rankings test until July, the Eagles have swapped spots with Romania, moving up to 16th in the world. They owe a thanks to rival Russia for the climb, as the Russians' 16-13 win over Romania on the weekend spurred the move.
Romania, Russia, Georgia, Germany, Portugal and Spain compete in the top division of the European Nations Cup during the Six Nations window. Romania, Georgia and Russia sit in the top three spots, respectively, on the table after three games. Georgia is now the team directly ahead of the United States in the World Rankings.
That Romania was ranked ahead of the United States, and Georgia still is, is a bit farcical, given the USA's head-to-head record against those nations. The Eagles are 6-1 all time against Romania, having won the last three in a row. Their only loss to the Oaks was in 1999. The USA is 3-1 all time against Georgia dating back to 2009. The Eagles have won the last two contests, in 2014 and 2012.
To right the rankings ship, Team USA will need to win some games this summer, as Georgia is almost four rankings points clear of the Eagles. That gap won't be closed by just a loss or two from Georgia. Full Rankings can be found here.
