Westfield Grad, Cole Akers earns Mitch Daniels Student Athlete Rugby Scholarship
WESTFIELD, Ind. – Purdue Men’s Rugby Team has signed Cole Akers to become a member of the team. The newest Boilermaker will join the squad in the fall of 2015 under head coach Mark Behrens, who is excited about Akers's arrival.
"Cole is a tenacious athlete who has been involved in Rugby since the 8th Grade. Cole has improved greatly due to an incredible work ethic," Behrens said. "We look forward to helping take his game to the next level." Behrens added, “We are happy that Cole was the first recipient of the Mitch Daniels Student Athlete Rugby Scholarship and hope to see a pipeline of players from Westfield.”
Current coach, Kurt Fehr, feels Cole “has been an outstanding leader on and off the rugby field. He always gives 100% effort in everything he does, and he takes time to teach new players the finer points of the game.” Cole was also captain of his Rugby club.
Cole has trained with the Eagle Impact Rugby Academy under the tutelage of Salty Thompson, High School All-American coach. Cole also represented the State of Indiana for the Past 3 years on the Indiana Select Side, Coached by Eddie Abel. Abel committed that “Cole is a good player and was able to play at a high level. I am sure he will elevate his game in college.” Cole was being recruited and offered scholarships from Bethel and Spring Hill Colleges to play rugby. Cole chose Purdue because of “the facilities and the opportunities available through jobs, internships and co-ops. Purdue provides all the elements to prepare me for a successful, future career. I really enjoyed the campus there," Akers said. "The atmosphere was friendly and I think I will fit in well at Purdue."
Cole attended Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School for two years before transferring to Westfield High School. Not only was Cole selected to the Indiana State Rugby Academic All-State Team the past two years, Cole was active in Boy Scouts of America where he earned the Eagle Scout rank, attended and graduated from the White Stag National Leadership Academy as a member of the Order of the Arrow. Cole was a National Honor Society member and volunteered helping youth in various capacities.
"During the Five years I have been playing Rugby, my parents couldn't have been more supportive," Cole said. "I don't think I would have been able to make any achievements without my family, teammates and coaches"
Cole joins former teammates Jack Stewart and Oliver Mackie at Purdue and is looking forward to contributing to the team any way possible.
