With the DII champion being crowned, the rankings are updated for the final time. UW-Whitewater capped off a tremendous year, winning a pair of games to take home the title and earn the top spot. For most of the year the Warhawks sat at number two, but a consistent performance ultimately proved the rankings wrong.
Minnesota-Duluth sat at number one for the entire year, thanks to three consecutive national titles. Duluth did not dominate teams like in years past, however, and Furman upended it in the semifinals. In the third place game, the Fighting Penguins were best by Norwich and as a result, fall to number four.
The question for number two is tough. Both Furman and Norwich lost to Whitewater but both also beat Duluth. Furman lost by less to Whitewater, but also won by less against Duluth. Since the Norwich win was a third place game, we take a little less stock in it and put Furman at number two.
With the poor showing for Duluth, North Dakota State falls one spot to number six. The strong showing for Norwich moves Vermont and Rhode Island up in the rankings. Both teams played competitively with Middlebury and Norwich, making the NECRC one of the strongest in the country.
