In 2009, a Women’s Nations Cup (WNC) took place in Toronto as a tune up to the Women’s Rugby World Cup scheduled for 2010. Five nations participated: England, Canada, France, USA, and South Africa.

The USA finished second behind England, which won its second WNC in a row. The Eagles ended with a 2-1-1 result, including wins over Canada (15-10), South Africa (39-0), a tie with France (15-15), and a loss to England. (7-36). Captain Christy Ringgenberg was high scorer for the USA with 19-points. Kathy Flores coached the team.

The Eagles had fared badly after the 2006 RWC, losing six test matches before defeating Canada in the WNC. Yet, the tournament revealed the existing gap between the USA and England, and also, New Zealand, both sides superior to the Americans. The Red Roses would go on to lose the 2010 WRWC to the Black Ferns in a close contest 13-10.
